On today’s episode of the Magic Table we talk about our own journey of understanding racism, social justice, and white privilege. With all that is going on in the world today…literally today we wanted to contribute to the conversation. We however do not have sort of knowledge that gives us the right to teach on or be experts on racism, social justice but we do have some knowledge about white privilege. So we decided to simply tell our story. We have been the recipients of some incredible mentorship over our 15 years of marriage. Those mentors have not looked like what one might normally think. We talk about the African American women, Latinas, and African American teenagers that profoundly shaped us. Out goal here is to simply show how breaking down racism and white privilege is something that must be done in community. Whether that is with people face to face or through literature we all need people to beak down long held stereotypes that keep us from seeing people as people. We also desire to see that white church break down barriers that have been built in this country for 400 years. The gospel demands that we take action and the Holy Spirit demands that we stand for all people created in God’s image. We hope you are challenged and encouraged by this episode. It is not easy work. There will be trials, but it is what we must do. Only then will we truly be able to love our neighbor. That is our calling.
