Suzie Lahoud holds two master’s degrees in Middle Eastern Studies; from the Arab Baptist Theological Seminary in Beirut and Harvard University. She earned her bachelor’s degree magna cum laude from Duke University with a double-major in Russian and Middle Eastern Studies. During her time at Harvard, she was selected, as a grant recipient through the Ramez and Tiziana Sousou Fund, to join a group of 13 students from across Harvard’s graduate schools to travel to Jordan and embark on an assessment of the dilemmas facing humanitarian actors responding to the war in Syria. She was also the recipient of the best thesis prize for her department. Suzie is a published author and has over a decade of experience living and working overseas, most recently having spent five years in Lebanon managing relief and development projects for refugee and internally displaced populations in Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq. Sy Hoekstra is a public defender in the child welfare system in New York City. He previously was a Staff Attorney at the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Sy graduated cum laude from New York University School of Law in 2014. During law school, he worked in the fields of criminal justice and disability rights. In 2010, he earned his bachelor’s degree in History and German literature from Columbia University. After graduating from Columbia, he spent a year organizing college students for political advocacy in Washington, DC with International Justice Mission. Sy was born in North Dakota, grew up in the Midwest and Northeast, lived for several years as a teenager in Zurich, Switzerland, and now lives in New York City with his wife.
